There are many sites that offer driving lessons uk style. But very few of them are cheap enough for a teen-aged driver to afford, especially one who's about to take their driving practice test for the fourth time. My friends used to joke that I would keep the motor trade in business. It was funny when they did it, but not so amusing when the examiner for the driving practice test made the motor trade comment toward the end of my third driving practice test.

Still, finally I did pass, much to my mother's dismay and my father's amusement. Then I set out on my quest to find a cheap car in the Leeds motor trade.

On my way to my first stop, I saw an elderly woman struggling with some heavy shopping bags. I wasn't in a real hurry, so I asked if I could help her home with her things. At first she looked suspiciously at me, but I guess I must not have seemed too menacing, because she agreed and handed over the heavy bags. They really were heavy, too. Even I was having some difficulty with them.

Finally we arrived at her block of flats, and then there were three flights of stairs up to her door. I carefully set the carrier bags down on her kitchen table, and turned to leave, when she suddenly grasped my hand and tried to press some money into it.

"Oh, no need, ma'am. I was going this way anyway." It was only a small lie; I wasn't actually going anywhere near there, but I really hadn't had an exact destination anyway.

"Usually I have to carry them home all by myself, and it takes hours," the woman said softly. "I'd feel really grateful if you'd let me pay you for helping me."

I could tell from her flat that she didn't have much money to spare. So I suggested that, rather than paying me, she could adopt me as her grandchild, and then I could help her every week. And she could make me cookies and tell me stories and I'd have a proper grandmother like the other kids did.

She agreed, and so I helped her every weekend. We became very close, over the next year or so. I often lamented that I couldn't afford even a cheap car, and pouted because part time jobs were hard to find, too. She always listened patiently and put up with my whining. And then, one weekend, she said she had a surprise for me.

And sure enough, waiting out back was a beautiful, shiny, new... bike. "You always complained that you didn't have any way to get around, so I thought I'd get you this!" she beamed.

I never did have the heart to tell her I already had one.
